Accessible tourism
Accessible tourism is about making travel and tourism destinations, products, and services available to all, regardless of their age, physical or cognitive abilities. It’s about removing physical barriers.
Inclusive tourism goes a step further by not only making travel accessible, but also creating an environment that welcomes and accommodates people from all backgrounds and abilities. It's about ensuring that travellers feel comfortable and included during their travels.
As part of our South Australia Tourism Plan 2030, we are focussed on taking a leadership position on inclusive tourism nationally and creating an environment where everyone feels truly welcome in South Australia.
We do this not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it’s a significant growth opportunity. Latest figures show 18% of Australians, or 4.4 million people, have a disability and 22%, or 5.5 million, have a long-term health condition. While the estimated total value of domestic travel by people with disability and access needs and people who travelled with them in the June 2023 quarter was $6.8 billion. This amounted to 21 per cent of total domestic tourism spend in that quarter.
