One year on – Kangaroo Island & Adelaide Hills

On this day 12 months ago, one of South Australia’s tourism jewels, Kangaroo Island was devastated by bushfires. The blazes wreaked havoc on the Island’s community over several days, destroying 87 homes, burning 211,000ha of scrub, and tragically, taking the lives of two people. Many businesses and livelihoods were impacted or destroyed, including the luxury Southern Ocean Lodge.

It has been a year of recovery for the Island. We’ve seen homes rebuilt, visitors return and nature regenerate in unbelievable ways. Both Kangaroo Island and the Adelaide Hills are incredible, unique holiday destinations, and there are many local producers, growers and tourism operators who continue to welcome visitors and their support to help them recover and rebuild.

The South Australian Tourism Commission created the video below to showcase the beauty of nature regeneration and the healing power of people and communities.

Thank you to the Adelaide Hills’ and Kangaroo Island communities for sharing your stories.
