MICHELIN Guide South Australia to be revealed tonight

The wait is almost over, with the inaugural MICHELIN Guide South Australia to be revealed to the world tonight.

The announcement will mark the first time any Australian destination has been featured in the world-famous guide.

Local industry leaders, chefs and restaurateurs will gather this evening at the Adelaide Convention Centre to celebrate the people, produce, and places that make South Australia a must-visit culinary destination.

From as early as tomorrow, selected hospitality destinations across the state will display the globally recognised MICHELIN Guide plaques to indicate to visitors they are included in the MICHELIN Guide South Australia 2027.

Distinctions announced tonight may include MICHELIN Stars, Bib Gourmand, and Michelin Selected, alongside individual Special Awards such as Young Chef Award, Service Award, and Sommelier Award. Chefs from restaurants receiving coveted MICHELIN Stars will receive a special MICHELIN chef jacket.

Anonymous MICHELIN Guide inspectors have evaluated restaurants across the state through five universal criteria, including the quality of the ingredients, the mastery of cooking techniques, the harmony of flavours, the personality of the cuisine and the overall consistency.

The selection process is entirely independent, and restaurants cannot pay to be included or awarded distinctions.

MICHELIN Stars are the most famous distinctions, awarded to restaurants offering the best culinary experiences – with only a very small fraction (approximately 4% or 161 restaurants) of all starred restaurants in the MICHELIN Guide rated three Stars. There are 549 restaurants worldwide rated two MICHELIN Stars.

While the MICHELIN Guide is often associated with fine dining, the style of a restaurant and its level of comfort or formality have no bearing on the award. MICHELIN Stars have been awarded to a wide range of eateries from street food stalls to gourmet restaurants.

Tonight’s ceremony will be livestreamed globally via the MICHELIN Guide’s official YouTube channel from 6.30pm ACDT.

Minister for Tourism, Emily Bourke said the day has finally arrived – in mere hours we will know which restaurants will be included in the inaugural MICHELIN Guide South Australia.

"This is an historic occasion for our state and our country, as we become home to the first and only MICHELIN restaurants in Australia," Minister Bourke said.

"As seen in other destinations, following recognition in the MICHELIN Guide, foodies from across the world flock to check out the hottest culinary destination, with the benefits anticipated to not only reach our hospitality and tourism sectors, but our regions and producers as well."

Australian Food Advocate & SA Woman of the Year for Hospitality, Mandy Hall said a restaurant can be the reason someone travels halfway around the world, and when they arrive – they discover a whole region.

"They meet its people, eat its produce, visit its businesses and begin to understand what makes that place special, so one restaurant’s recognition can open doors for so many others," Ms Hall said.

"There’s something else about this moment, the significance reaches so much further than the restaurant itself. It reaches the fisherman, the apple grower, the farmer, the winemaker, the ceramicist making the plates, the knife maker, the person who has tended their soil tediously, the person washing dishes long after the diners have gone home. It reaches the local hotel, caravan park, the luxury accommodation, little businesses in our towns, the tourism information centre and beyond."
