More than 600 of Australia’s elite swimmers are set to do battle in Adelaide this week when the 2022 Australian Swimming Championships kicks off tomorrow.

Australia’s best swimmers – including 46 South Australian athletes – are ready to race over five days and nights at the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre.

The championships will be held on 18-22 May with selection for the upcoming FINA World Championships and Commonwealth Games on the line.

Since 2011, South Australia has hosted 20 international and national standard swimming competitions - injecting more than $41 million into the state’s economy.

Local swimmers include South Australian based Olympians Kyle Chalmers, Madi Wilson, Meg Harris, Matthew Temple and Zac Incerti.

Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing, Katrine Hildyard said:

“Adelaide always proudly puts on a great show whenever swimming comes to town.”

“To have the nation’s best competing here will be sensational – for our community who love to get together and cheer these swimmers on, and for young swimmers who aspire to follow their sporting dreams and will no doubt be inspired by the incredibly talented athletes who will take to the pool.”

“We are proud of our long relationship with Swimming Australia and look forward to continuing to work together to create an excellent environment for our elite swimmers, and to hopefully help them fulfil their goals to proudly represent Australia on the world’s stage.”

Swimming Australia President Tracy Stockwell OAM said:

“Adelaide holds fond memories for many of our athletes as the foundations for our incredibly successful campaign in Tokyo were laid right here at last year’s Trials, so it’s a pleasure to return to this world class venue.

“We’d like to thank both the Minister and the South Australian Tourism Commission for their ongoing support of our sport and look forward to seeing not only our swimming family, but the broader sport loving community pack the grandstand this week as the best athletes in the country put on a show.”

Tickets for the event can be purchased through the Swimming Australia website.
