Adelaide to host Westfield Matildas vs Chile in November Friendly
Adelaide will play host to The Matildas when they play South American giants Chile in a friendly at Coopers Stadium in November.
The game, part of a two-match series, will only be the second for The Matildas on home soil, since returning from an impressive campaign at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
It’s the first time the team has played in South Australia in over ten years.
Premier Steven Marshall said securing the match is a coup for the state’s sporting scene.
“This is thrilling news for our state. We are finally going to have The Matildas back in South Australia, playing in front of a packed Coopers Stadium,” said Premier Marshall.
“This team is inspiring young women around the nation, and it’s fantastic that we’ll have another opportunity to see some world-class football right here in our state.
“Games like this put our state on the map as a national and international destination and boost our profile.
“This just adds to the suite of incredible sporting events we already have on our calendar in South Australia.
“I can’t wait to see our Matildas take to the field later this year in what’s sure to be a great game.”
Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, David Ridgway said South Australia is no stranger to hosting these high-profile events.
“The Westfield Matildas and Chile rounds out an exciting 2019 sporting events calendar, which has included a record-breaking Santos Tour Down Under, Superloop Adelaide 500 and ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open Golf Championships,” said Minister Ridgway.
“We’ve also had the Sydney Roosters vs Melbourne Storm, ahead of the NRL State of Origin in 2020.”
The Westfield Matildas will play Chile at Bankwest Stadium, Parramatta in NSW on 9 November for the first match in the series, before facing Chile at Coopers Stadium in Adelaide on 12 November.
