It was a tragic start to the summer of 2019-2020 with bushfires in the Adelaide Hills and Kangaroo Island, causing terrible losses to life, homes, property and livelihoods. Local tourism businesses were devastated and there was a flow-on effect of the bushfires to other parts of the state.

It was essential that we understood the impacts of these fires and the priorities for recovery by getting first-hand information from South Australian tourism operators – both those directly, and indirectly, affected by the fires.

To achieve this understanding, industry meetings were held in the Adelaide Hills and Kangaroo Island. The outcomes from these meetings, in summary form, are available below.

Our thanks to those business that completed our bushfire impact survey. A summary of the results is available for download below. Using the information from this survey, as well as the information from the community sessions, the SATC compiled an action list of priorities to assist in bushfire recovery. Some of these actions are completed and many are of an ongoing nature. The list is available for review below.

With the COVID-19 pandemic only adding to the challenges, it is critical that we continue to work together to help these communities get back on their feet and ensure that tourism in South Australia recovers as quickly as possible.
