This fact sheet includes top level information which provides a snapshot of South Australia's position in the market*.

Top points from the report:

  • Total expenditure has grown to a $7.8 billion, up 7 per cent for the year.
  • Interstate overnight expenditure grew 3 per cent and Intrastate overnight expenditure grew 14 per cent.
  • Nationally expenditure grew 3 per cent for the year end March 2020

Domestic:

  • South Australia attracted 7.8 million domestic overnight trips, up 11 per cent, and well above the national growth rate of 3 per cent.
  • There were 26.9 million domestic nights in South Australia, a rise of 8 per cent on the previous year and above the national growth rate of 5 per cent.
  • There were a record 17.2 million Day trips to and within South Australia, up 20 per cent and above the national growth rate of 9 per cent.
  • Total domestic expenditure in South Australia rose to $6.7 billion, up 9 per cent and above the national growth rate of 7 per cent.
  • Day trips expenditure grew 11 per cent to a record $1.7 billio

International:

  • Visits to South Australia have fallen by 3 per cent to 441,000 for the year end March 2020.
  • Expenditure fell 3 per cent to $1.1 billion for the year end March 2020.
  • Chinese visitation fell by 24 per cent, nights fell 20 per cent and expenditure fell 19 per cent for the year.
  • The Indian market has grown across all metrics with visits up 66 per cent, nights up 40 per cent and expenditure up 40 per cent.
  • France saw visits increase by 7 per cent, nights grow by 17 per cent and expenditure up 60 per cent

STATE TOURISM SATELLITE ACCOUNTS

The State Tourism Satellite Account provides measures of tourism gross domestic product, tourism gross value added, tourism trade and employment in tourism. 

Top points from the report

  • People employed directly in tourism in South Australia has increased by 4 per cent to a record high 40,500 for the year end June 2019.
  • The tourism industry indirectly employed an additional 23,200 people bringing the total number of people employed in tourism to 63,800. This was up 5 per cent for the year end June 2018.
  • The Gross Value Add of tourism in South Australia has reached a high of $3.3 billion in 2018-19, a 8 per cent increase on last year.
