Thousands of cyclists take on the challenge

25 January 2013

Amateur cyclists will pave the way for the professionals today as the 2013 Bupa Challenge Tour kicks off Bupa Stage 4 of the Santos Tour Down Under.

More than 6,500 cyclists will ride this stage of a UCI World Tour event. Riders chose to complete the full 127 kilometre route, or shorter legs including the new family-friendly 20 kilometre option.

Minister for Tourism Leon Bignell said the Bupa Challenge Tour appealed to everyone from serious recreational cyclists to families and corporate teams.

“This year we have introduced a shorter 20 kilometre option for the Bupa Challenge Tour to allow more families and beginners to get involved,” Minister Bignell said.

“The Bupa Challenge Tour is the only public ride of its kind where amateurs can ride on the same route as the professionals on the same day of the UCI World Tour race.

“It’s fantastic to see so many keen cyclists taking part in this great event, which is all about aiming for your personal best and having a great time.”

The Bupa Stage 4 of the Santos Tour Down Under begins in Modbury at 11am and finishes in Tanunda about 2.15pm.

A new initiative, World Detours Down Under, was introduced for the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under and encourages visitors to plan their time around the race.

Detours around Bupa Stage 4 feature South Australia’s premium food and wine. Highlights include the Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre at Rowland Flat, Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop at Nuriootpa, Hentley Farm at Seppeltsfield and Kingsford Homestead.
