TDU peloton faces toughest test yet on Willunga Hill

24 January 2015

The notorious Willunga Hill will be the centrepiece of today’s BikeExchange Stage 5 of the Santos Tour Down Under.

The riders will climb Willunga Hill for the Subaru King of the Mountain, and then again in the race to the finish line.

The 151-kilometre stage begins at McLaren Vale at 11.10 this morning and will travel through Willunga, Aldinga Beach, Snapper Point, Port Willunga and Aldinga.

Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said the huge crowd likely to converge on the region for today’s stage could expect to see some of the world’s best cycling action.

“One of the greatest challenges for the teams contesting the Santos Tour Down Under is Willunga Hill. It can make or break the race for many riders,” he said.

“It’s also one of the great spectacles for cycling fans, so I would encourage everyone to find a spot early on Willunga Hill to watch some of the world’s best riders tackle the climb.

“The Esplanade at Snapper Point, and the main streets of McLaren Vale and Willunga Hill are also great places to watch today’s action.”

Minister Bignell said BikeExchange Stage 5 was also an excellent showcase for the Fleurieu Peninsula and the McLaren Vale wine region.

“Cycling fans around the world will be watching the peloton riding through some of Australia’s best known vineyards, while spectators can take the opportunity of being in the region for the Tour to visit the many cellar doors, restaurants, and shops,” he said.

The Minister said the annual Santos Tour Down Under Legends Night dinner would be held tonight, with three-time Tour de France winner and two-time UCI World Road Race champion Greg LeMond the very special guest.

“It’s an honour to have Greg in Adelaide for the Tour, and I’m looking forward to hearing some special stories from the cycling legend first hand,” he said.

Detours presented by Europcar encourages visitors to plan their time around the race and experience the different regions of South Australia.
