Rising cycling star Edvald Boasson Hagen will kick off his 2013 season at the Santos Tour Down Under alongside a strong contingent of Sky Pro Cycling riders.
The Norwegian 25-year-old is set to impress over a challenging race route and will be joined by a strong team including Bernhard Eisel and Ben Swift.
Santos Tour Down Under Race Director Mike Turtur expects Boasson Hagen will be keen to test his legs in the People’s Choice Classic in Adelaide on January 20.
“There’s always plenty of excitement when cyclists take to the track for the first time in this 51-kilometre closed circuit race,” Mr Turtur said.
“Boasson Hagen finished second to André Greipel in this year’s Down Under Classic and I’m sure it will again be a close battle to the finish line.”
The 2012 season delivered Boasson Hagen a series of hard-fought victories. He finished first in the road race at Norway’s National Championships and won the Glava Tour of Norway.
He also claimed stage wins at the Volta ao Algarva, Tirreno-Adriatico and Critérium du Dauphiné.
“Along with these victories, Boasson Hagen was second in the UCI Road World Championship road race, third overall in the Tour of Beijing and seventh overall in the Santos Tour Down Under, where he took out the Jayco Sprint Jersey,” Mr Turtur said.
“He is certainly a rider to watch and we look forward to welcoming the entire Sky Pro Cycling team back to South Australia next month for the first race on the UCI WorldTour calendar.”
Experienced Australian domestique Mathew Hayman and British road race champion Ian Stannard also feature in the Sky Pro Cycling roster.
Crowd favourite and Santos Tour Down Under stage winner, Chris ‘CJ’ Sutton will take to the pedals once again to head up the team’s Jayco Sprint classification ambitions.
The Sky Pro Cycling team for the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under will be led by Sport Director Kurt Arvesen and includes riders Edvald Boasson Hagen (NOR), Bernhard Eisel (AUT), Mathew Hayman (AUS), Chris Sutton (AUS) Luke Rowe (GBR), Ian Stannard (GBR) and Geraint Thomas (GBR).
More rider and team announcements will be issued over the coming weeks. The Santos Tour Down Under will be held in Adelaide and regional South Australia from 20-27 January 2013.
