St Michael’s Lutheran Primary School student takes top honours in Pageant Mini-Float Competition

10 September 2015

St Michael’s Lutheran Primary School student, Maddy Nyp, 12, has taken the honours in the 2015 Credit Union Christmas Pageant Mini-Float Design Competition, beating 391 designs from 33 schools around South Australia.

Tourism Minister Leon Bignell congratulated Maddy and all of the other students who entered the competition and said he was overwhelmed by the outstanding designs.

“Maddy’s winning design “Get Well Soon” starring “Band-Aid” the Teddy Bear, reminds everyone that not all children can attend the Christmas Pageant as they may be in hospital or unwell at home,” he said.

“The competition gives school children around the State the chance to be a part of the magic of the Credit Union Christmas Pageant and is an exciting opportunity for students, like Maddy, to show off their creative talent.”

The mini-float competition, which is held every two years, was open to individual students as well as class entries.

Mr Peter Evers, Chair, Credit Union Pageant Company, said he was thrilled once again to see the high level of entries in the biennial Credit Union Christmas Pageant Mini-Float Design Competition – now in its fifth year.

Entries have steadily grown since the competition’s inception in 2007 and thanks must go to the teachers and caregivers who encourage students to take the time to enter.

“The Credit Unions congratulate all of the individual students and schools that entered this year. The standard of the entries and effort put into the designs were once again exceptional and made the judges’ decision extremely tough. In the end it was Maddy’s creativity and caring thoughts for others that made her entry stand out,” Mr Evers said.

“Maddy’s ‘Get well soon’ concept has been awarded the honour and privilege of being built to appear in this year’s Pageant, $500 donated by the credit unions and a visit to Stardust Castle to preview the completed mini-float with her class,” he said.

All designs in the Mini-Float Competition had to be original and could not include branded signage or copyright characters, or themes from movies or musicals.

A mini-float is a small mobile set that is light enough to be pushed or pulled along the Pageant route.

The 2015 Credit Union Christmas Pageant is on Saturday, 14 November 2015.

The Credit Union Christmas Pageant is owned and managed by the South Australian Tourism Commission on behalf of the South Australian Government and sponsored by four leading credit unions in South Australia – People’s Choice, Beyond Bank Australia, Credit Union SA and Police Credit Union.
