South Australia is the nation’s Best Event State

South Australia is officially the Best Event State in Australia.
The prestigious title was given to South Australia at the Australian Event Awards at a special ceremony in Sydney last night.
Accepting the Award, Tourism Minister Bignell said it was brilliant recognition of the State Government’s tireless work in attracting and creating the state’s much-loved events.
“Our state prides itself on the fantastic achievements of the Adelaide Festival, WOMADelaide, Adelaide Fringe, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Barossa Vintage Festival, Tasting Australia, Santos Tour Down Under, Clipsal 500, and most recently a widely successful Adelaide Fashion Festival,” Mr Bignell said.
“We are always working hard to bring more exciting events to SA. The Liverpool FC and Adelaide United game, the World Cup Cricket match between India and Pakistan and AFL matches at the redeveloped Adelaide Oval have all helped build on our outstanding reputation.
“Earlier this week I announced the Women’s Australian Open Golf Tournament which has been secured for the next three years.
“Major events are critical to our visitor economy, contributing $277 million each year. They excitement and vibrancy to our state and attract interstate and international tourists.
“In this year's Budget, the State Government committed an additional $35 million to market South Australia nationally and internationally and to attract major events and conferences.
“The visitor economy is worth $5.4 billion to our state and tourism employs 32,000 people. Our goal is for it to reach $8 billion by 2020 and to create an extra 9000 jobs.”
Overall South Australia also won for WOMADelaide, for EVENTelec Best Cultural, Arts or Music Event, and Adelaide Writers’ Week, winner of Coates Hire Best Community Event.
A further seven Best Event finalists took place in South Australia.
The Australian Event Awards are the pinnacle awards program for the events industry in Australia. They are judged by an independent panel and are open to all Australian events, event managers and support service providers.
Event categories include Best Sporting Event, Best Tourism Event, Best Cultural, Arts or Music Event, Best New Event, Young Achiever of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Australia’s Favourite Event and State or Territory Award. www.eventawards.com.au
