ŠKODA King of the Mountain decider for day five of the Tour

26 January 2013

Cyclists in the Santos Tour Down Under will face one of their biggest challenges today in the ŠKODA King of the Mountain finish to Jayco Stage 5 of the race.

McLaren Vale is preparing to welcome thousands of spectators for the stage, with cellar doors, restaurants and markets offering race-goers the chance to sample local wines and produce.

Minister for Tourism Leon Bignell said the ŠKODA Old Willunga Hill King of the Mountain finish was one of the most exhilarating stages of the event.

“This climb is a chance for the world’s best riders to stamp their authority on the Santos Tour Down Under,” Minister Bignell said.

“Fans have a fantastic opportunity to watch these athletes in action and I urge locals and visitors alike to come out and cheer them on.”

Today’s Santos Festival of Cycling calendar boasts plenty to keep all fans entertained, with the Peloton Picnic in Willunga and Beach Party at Aldinga Beach just some of the great activities on offer.

“The southern stage of the Santos Tour Down Under showcases some of South Australia’s best scenery,” Minister Bignell said.

“From the rolling hills to vineyards, coastal cliffs and beaches, it is a spectacular setting from which to witness this UCI World Tour event.”

Today’s stage comes ahead of this evening’s Legends’ Night Dinner, which will see cycling legends Andy Schleck, Philippe Gilbert, Anna Meares and Bernard Hinault honoured at the Adelaide Convention Centre from 7.30pm.

“Fans who are attending will hear stories from these remarkable riders and share in celebrating their many achievements,” Minister Bignell said.

A new initiative, World Detours Down Under, was introduced for the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under and encourages visitors to plan their time around the race.

Detours highlights around Jayco Stage 5 feature some of South Australia’s premium food and wine experiences including the Star of Greece at Port Willunga and the Red Poles cafe and art gallery at McLaren Vale, along with Victor Harbor’s Big Duck Boat Tours and Adelaide Biplanes.
