11 April 2015
South Australian tourism operators were honoured on home soil at last night’s Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, receiving a total of eight medals.
Pindarie Cellar Door and Yondah Beach House were presented with the highest accolade, winning gold in the categories of Tourism Wineries, Distilleries and Breweries and Deluxe Accommodation.
Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said the evening was a celebration of the best of the best and the enormous effort of operators and businesses in establishing Australia as the ultimate holiday destination.
“This is the one night of the year when you have tourism’s exceptional operators all in the one room,” Mr Bignell said.
“From brand new businesses to iconic experiences Australia is renowned for – the evening recognises our diverse tourism industry and its outstanding reputation.
“The calibre of South Australian tourism businesses at this year’s event was exceptional and I was pleased to see South Australia represented in 27 out of 28 categories.
“The awards night is the perfect opportunity to thank tourism’s top operators and recognise their contributions to the industry.
“Tourism is a key driver of the South Australian economy so it is especially pleasing to see our state winners recognised on a national stage.
“Their passion and commitment is outstanding and it makes others in the industry strive for excellence.
“Last year tourism generated $5.2 billion in expenditure for our economy and with success stories such as these it is easy to see why. Achieving our goal of a tourism industry worth $8 billion by 2020 will generate a further 10,000 jobs.
“It was an honour for Adelaide to host such a successful Awards night for its milestone 30th anniversary,” Mr Bignell said.
The awards were held at the refurbished Adelaide Convention Centre. Nominations for this year’s South Australian Tourism Awards will close on Friday 19 June 2015. The Awards night will be held on Friday 30 November 2015.
