International stars, including Little Britain’s Matt Lucas, along with up and coming locals, are set to shine this winter at a new festival exploring the power of words.
The entertaining and inspiring new festival - Word Adelaide - will be held from 15th-18th August 2013 at a range of city venues.
It will feature English comedian, screenwriter, singer and actor Matt Lucas, who is best known for his role in the television series Little Britain.
Matt will share the Adelaide Entertainment Centre stage on Saturday August 17th with comedian Kitty Flanagan, Emeritus Professor of Language Roly Sussex and bassist Guy Pratt, who has played with Pink Floyd, Robert Palmer and Icehouse.
Minister for Tourism Leon Bignell said the new winter event complements the annual calendar of festivals.
“The Word Adelaide festival is focused on participation, and we would love to see as many people as possible getting involved - August is fast approaching and we encourage everyone to spread the word: a new event is on its way.”
Other highlights include Words Without Music on Sunday 18 August at Her Majesty’s Theatre, which will feature Gary Kemp from Spandau Ballet and Guy Pratt discussing the lyrics to their world-famous songs.
Emerging and established MCs are invited to enter the festival’s Freestyle MC Competition, which includes suburban heats and a city final. Its $10,000 winner-take-all first prize puts it among the largest open rap competitions around the globe.
Yarn spinning with Kitty Flanagan, soapbox with comedian Joel Ozborn, a writing competition, public readings, indigenous story-telling and events in partnership with the SALA Festival and the State Library also feature in the program.
