19 February 2015
It’s official – the exhibition match between the Liverpool Football Club and Adelaide United at the Adelaide Oval on July 20 is a sell out.
Tourism Minister Leon Bignell had the privilege of escorting Liverpool FC Commercial Manager Olly Dale and club great Robbie Fowler on a tour of Adelaide Oval today, ahead of the upcoming tour.
“This match is a sell out and is generating huge interest everywhere you go,” Mr Bignell said.
“Since tickets went on sale on Monday the response has been tremendous. More than 9500 tickets have been sold to fans from interstate and overseas. The event will inject about $10 million into our economy as fans spend time in our hotels, restaurants and visit other key attractions in South Australia.
“The benefit to South Australia cannot be underestimated with not only the increased visitor numbers but also the international exposure we will gain from the match.
“Last week more than one billion people worldwide watched the India vs Pakistan World Cup Cricket match, proving Adelaide Oval now offers one of the best spectator experiences in the world. This football game will provide another extraordinary experience.”
Liverpool Football Club is England's most successful club with 41 major honours, 18 times champions of England and 5 times champions of Europe.
Mr Bignell said he was thrilled to meet Liverpool FC Ambassador Robbie Fowler and looked forward to meeting the entire squad when they play in Adelaide later this year.
“Robbie is an icon of the game. He played 236 games for Liverpool and scored 183 goals in total for the club, 128 of which were scored in the Premier League. He also represented England 26 times in his illustrious career.
“It’s an absolute honour to be able to show him our great Adelaide Oval.”
The match will be played on July 20 at Adelaide Oval. Liverpool FC has confirmed it will hold an open training session on the weekend prior to the game.
