Last chance for Bupa Challenge Tour teams to register

01 November 2013

Riders planning to take on the 2014 Bupa Challenge Tour as a team have until 5pm today to register.

Next year’s event will be held between Unley and Victor Harbor on Friday, 24 January and features four distance options to suit cyclists of all abilities.

Tourism Minister, Leon Bignell, said the full Bupa Challenge Tour was 154.5 kilometres, with a ride of 33 kilometres from Yankalilla the shortest route available.

“We know teams get a real thrill out of riding in the Bupa Challenge Tour – they train together, encourage each other and share the satisfaction of crossing the finish line,” Mr Bignell said.

“Team members can begin their ride from any of the four start locations and teams of five or more are eligible to have their team name printed on the back of their official Bupa Challenge Tour jersey.”

The 2014 Bupa Challenge Tour will again be presented by The Advertiser and includes a ŠKODA King of the Mountain climb at Myponga Dam.

“This climb comes 100 kilometres into the full ride from Unley and, with a gradient of 7.2 per cent over 2.2 kilometres, it is sure to test everyone’s legs,” Mr Bignell said.

“As always there will be plenty of refreshment stations along the way and a special area at the finish line for riders to enjoy lunch and relax.”

The Bupa Challenge Tour is held each year ahead of Bupa Stage 4. Recreational riders cross the finish line just hours before the world’s best race along the same route.

Santos Tour Down Under race director, Mike Turtur, said all riders will be timed in 2014.

“This is an event first and is sure to spark some friendly rivalry. Now is the time for teams to get out and put in some kilometres on the bike – preparation will make all the difference come January,” Mr Turtur said.

More than 6500 people took part in the Bupa Challenge Tour this year, with many supporting Cancer Council SA by riding for a reason. Riders next year are also encouraged to raise money for the charity.

The Santos Tour Down Under will be held in Adelaide and regional South Australia from 19-26 January 2014, with Tour de France champion Cadel Evans among professional riders competing.
