A huge crowd is expected in the city today for the final stage of the 2015 Santos Tour Down Under.
Be Safe Ben Seen MAC Stage 6 will start at 1.30 pm this afternoon and will take the peloton along King William Street, War Memorial Drive, and Pennington Terrace. For the first time, the route also includes Victoria Square.
The riders will complete 20 laps of the 4.5 kilometre circuit.
Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said the final stage is traditionally an exciting climax to a great week of international cycling action.
“Last year the final stage decided the winner, with Australia’s Simon Gerrans edging out Tour de France winner Cadel Evans by just one second,” he said.
“As well as deciding this year’s winner, today is also the last opportunity to see Cadel Evans in a UCI WorldTour race, so I would encourage everyone to find a spot along the route and cheer Cadel to mark what’s been a remarkable professional career.”
As part of today’s festivities, more than 400 young cyclists aged from 6 to 12 years will ride the UCI WorldTour track just hours before the professionals for the popular Bupa Mini Tour for Kids, presented by the University of South Australia.
Minister Bignell said the mini tour was the perfect way to get children interested in cycling.
“It’s a unique opportunity for the kids to ride on the same tarmac as their heroes. Who knows – maybe some of the children riding in the mini tour today might be back for the professional race in a few years’ time.”
For the first time, today’s final stage has been developed into a Family Day, thanks to the State Government’s increased investment in this year’s Tour.
An array of activities have been organised to keep kids and the entire family entertained all day, from face painter, bubble blowing, cycling inspired craft and jewellery making, appearance by event mascot Oppy the Kangaroo, giant board games, jumping castle and more.
Spectators can watch the race at a number of vantage points along today’s city route, while the action will also be screened live on the big screen in the Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo in Victoria Square.
