Adelaide’s East End will come alive with the exhilarating People’s Choice Classic tonight as the curtain raiser of the 2016 Santos Tour Down Under.

Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said it would be the first time this year all 140 riders take to South Australian streets, completing 30 laps of the Rymill Park circuit.

“The People’s Choice Classic is a great preview to the six-stage Santos Tour Down Under and an exhilarating pre-cursor to the UCI WorldTour season,” he said.

“The Classic also launches a fantastic nine-day calendar of state-wide activity for the Santos Festival of Cycling.

“The Tour, now in its 18th year, brings plenty of excitement on and off track for cycling fanatics, families, children and the wider public.

“From participation events for all ages and capabilities to street parties, the popular best dressed town competition and of course the event hub at the Adelaide City Council Tour Village, there are many opportunities to soak up the atmosphere of this great event.

“Through strong interstate and overseas attendance and extensive international broadcast hours, South Australia and its beautiful, unique regions will be on show for the world to see.

“Locals can support the Santos Tour Down Under by getting out to watch a stage of the race, attending one of the nightly street parties or by encouraging tourists to explore the city and regions.

“For the first time members of the public can also experience the professional race circuit thanks to the Bupa Family Ride today.

“We know the Tour inspires increased recreational riding throughout the city and beyond, and it is a wonderful by-product of this event that people are active, engaged and become part of the cycling community.

“The entertainment doesn’t stop here with the People’s Choice Undies Run for bowel cancer and Stage 2 of the Santos Women’s Tour both taking to the track all before the Classic starts.”
