It has been a huge week for tourism in South Australia - not only have we been recognised for the second year in a row for being the Best Event State in the nation – but new data shows we are attracting a record number of interstate and international visitors who are boosting the State’s visitor economy to $5.95 billion.
The State Government has invested an additional $70 million into the tourism portfolio to market South Australia nationally and internationally and attract more major events and conferences. We are definitely on target to reach our goal of an $8 billion visitor economy by 2020.
We have some incredible events in South Australia – from Tasting Australia, Clipsal 500 Adelaide, Santos Tour Down Under, WOMADelaide, Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival, AFL, cricket and massive concerts at Adelaide Oval and the hundreds of business events at the Convention Centre.
It is also fantastic to see the Santos Tour Down Under continuing to gain the recognition it rightfully deserves. The 2016 event attracted 795,000 spectators and pumped a record $49.6 million into the State’s visitor economy.
Next year’s TDU will be even bigger and better and has attracted elite cyclists from across the globe – including cycling superstar and UCI World Road Champion Peter Sagan.
I would like to thank every single person who works so hard to ensure all of the State’s events are a success – from the organisers, the people behind the scenes and volunteers who dedicate their time and to all those who attend our fantastic events.

It is always nice for the Events South Australia team (those behind the scenes managing the event) to be recognised by the industry with such awards, for the results the event generates and the lasting impression it creates for the cycling fans or those experiencing the destination.
We the recent announcement that UCI World Road Champion, Peter Sagan, one of the most popular cyclists on the WorldTour, will take to the start line for the 2017 event, we are all looking forward to another amazing edition of the race next year.
