Australian Mountain Bike Champion to return to Santos Tour Down Under

11 December 2014

Australian Mountain Bike Champion Daniel McConnell will join the Trek Factory Racing team for January’s Santos Tour Down Under.

Tourism Minister Leon Bignell confirmed the team line up today and welcomed the news that the 2014 Commonwealth Games team member would be competing at the event.

“Daniel has performed very well in the Mountain Bike discipline, and with his previous road cycling experience we’re looking forward to seeing him as part of the Trek Factory Racing team in Adelaide,” he said.

“Trek Factory Racing has performed well at the Santos Tour Down Under, including claiming the Winning Team Classification in 2012 and 2013.”

Daniel said he was excited to be returning to the Santos Tour Down Under, having first debuted at the race in 2006.

“This is super exciting for me. I competed at the event back in 2006 with Team South - AIS. It was incredibly hot, but more than anything I remember the crowds in and around Adelaide, they were just phenomenal,” he said.

“We mountain bikers spend quite a bit of time on a road bike, especially when we build endurance in the months before the World Cup season starts in May. At the National Road Championships I go pretty well, and that’s on a hilly course – am looking forward to working for the team come January.”

Trek Factory Racing will count 27 riders of 14 different nationalities in 2015, making it one of the most international teams on the WorldTour.

Australian Calvin Watson will make his second appearance at the race and be joined by National Champions Laurent Didier and Hayden Rouslton.

Luxembourg’s Didier is the current Luxembourg National Individual Time Trial Champion and Roulston the New Zealand National Road Champion, a title he also claimed in 2013 and 2011.

The Trek Factory Racing team competing at the 2015 Santos Tour Down Under will be led by sport director Kim Anderson (Denmark) and also includes Eugenio Alafaci (Italy), Marco Coledan (Italy), Giacomo Nizzolo (Italy) and Calvin Watson (Australia).
