Adventure race heading to South Australia

21 September 2012

Competitors from around the globe will gather in South Australia next year for an internationally renowned adventure race.

Events South Australia General Manager Hitaf Rasheed today announced that the South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC), through Events South Australia, had agreed to support the 2013 XPD Adventure Race.

“This event will be held in the Flinders Ranges from September 2-14 and will involve 50 teams of four competitors in action for up to 10 days,” Ms Rasheed said.

“It is the first time the XPD Adventure Race has been held in South Australia and we look forward to welcoming participants, organisers and spectators to our state.”

The XPD Adventure Race is part of the Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS), an international circuit of 10 high-profile races.

“Next September competitors will trek, mountain bike, kayak and complete roping sections across a spectacular 700-kilometre Flinders Ranges course,” Ms Rasheed said.

“The race will be broadcast in Australia and around the world, with four 30-minute episodes of the international television series Wild Racers to be dedicated to competition in South Australia.

“These broadcast opportunities will enable the SATC to promote the majestic Flinders Ranges as a unique tourism destination.”

Both novice and professional teams are eligible to enter the XPD Adventure Race, with event entries typically selling out within a day.

Competitors receive course details just 24 hours before the event begins and must navigate through a series of checkpoints.

Professional teams that enter the XPD Adventure Race are aiming to gain a qualifying place in the annual Adventure Racing World Championships.

ARWS Director Craig Bycroft said he was delighted the series was heading to South Australia.

“I’m sure the 2013 XPD Adventure Race in the Flinders Ranges will be a huge success and look forward to exploring the state of South Australia,” Mr Bycroft said.
