Minister for Tourism

Australia’s top netball stars will take on England when Adelaide hosts the first Australian match of the inaugural international Netball Quad Series tonight.

As netball’s strongest nations come together, the Australian Diamonds will go head to head with the England Roses at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

The Netball Quad Series will be contested annually between Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa.

Background

The last time Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa played a tournament outside the Netball World Cup and Commonwealth Games was in 2012.

Australia is currently the number one netball nation in the world, New Zealand is number two and England at number three. Limited tickets are still available via ticketek.com.au

This is the Diamonds’ first appearance in South Australia since October 2013, where they triumphed over the New Zealand Silver Ferns 58-50.

We know this Series will be a huge success. Netball is one of the most popular sports in South Australia, with more than 110,000 players across the State and with the state-of-the-art facilities at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, it is the perfect place to host some of the world’s best players and their huge fan base.

The State Government has invested $70 million to market South Australia nationally and internationally, and to attract major events and conferences. Our visitor economy is currently at a record $5.7 billion and we are working hard to grow it to $8 billion by 2020.

We have also pumped $11.25 million in to netball since 2002.

In this year’s $40 million mega sport budget we also announced $10 million for female change rooms at sport clubs across the state. Applications for Round 1 of the Female Facilities Program open on September 9.

Our State Government is proudly committed to supporting women’s sport and women in sport. Through our Taskforce and initiatives like our $10 million funding for women’s change rooms, we are ensuring girls and women are able to equally and actively participate in their chosen sport and that they are able to follow their sporting dreams.

Our State Government is also working around the clock to attract major sporting events to our beautiful state and the Diamonds versus Roses match is one of the many women’s sporting events which we have worked hard to secure. Through events like this, we position ourselves as a hub for women’s sport.

As well as the Netball Quad Series, so far this year we have had the ISPS Handa Women's Australian Open and the Santos Women's Tour (which was granted international status by the world's governing body) – both of which were successful.

This is going to be a great event in one of our State’s best facilities. I am looking forward to cheering on the mighty Diamonds!

Quotes attributable to Australian Diamonds Head Coach Lisa Alexander

This will be the Diamonds’ first Test on Australia soil for 2016 and we cannot wait to see our fans out in force in green and gold. We greatly appreciate the support of the State Government in what will be our first Test match in South Australia in three years.
