Music fans are in for a treat as superstar Leo Sayer and blues/roots siren Taasha Coates from The Audreys join the lineup for next month’s Word Adelaide festival.
The pair will appear as part of Words Without Music at Her Majesty’s Theatre on Sunday 18 August, along with Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet) and bassist Guy Pratt (Pink Floyd, Icehouse).
Word Adelaide creative director Jane Intini said she was thrilled Leo and Taasha were part of the festival.
“Leo Sayer is a man who needs no introduction. He’s a Grammy-winning songwriter and lyricist who has sold out every major concert venue on the planet, with over 30 million sales to his name,” Jane said.
“I’m honoured that Leo will be joining us at Word Adelaide to share his thoughts on what makes a great song lyric. His 40-plus year career is one to be lauded and applauded.
“He’ll be joined by Taasha Coates, whose magnificent voice and thoughtful lyrics are a major reason The Audreys are one of South Australia’s greatest musical exports of the past 20 years.”
Taasha – who with bandmate Tristan Goodall has won three ARIA awards – said she looked forward to being part of Word Adelaide.
“To be able to share the stage with some of the world’s greatest songwriters and talk about songs and lyrics is an opportunity of a lifetime...and being from Adelaide, it is an even greater thrill that I didn’t have to go to Sydney or London to do it,” Taasha said.
“Word Adelaide is one of the most interesting festivals I’ve ever been asked to be part of and talking about one of my greatest passions with some of the artists I most admire is incredible. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I can’t wait!”
Words Without Music is a ‘backstage’ conversation between songwriters who have sold millions of records. It is not a lyric writing masterclass but a uniquely entertaining evening of opinions and stories from people who made the music that defined generations.
Audience members can join the conversation via specially designed software that is only available inside the venue. They will ask the questions and help shape the direction of the show as the evening progresses.
Word Adelaide is a new festival celebrating the power of words. It will be held from August 15-18 at venues across the city. Please visit the Word Adelaide website to buy tickets and find out more.
Word Adelaide is proudly owned and managed by Events South Australia, a division of the South Australian Tourism Commission.
