The Spheres

The Spheres The Spheres

The heart of Rundle Mall may have been M.I.A (missing in action) during the recent redevelopment, but Adelaide’s most renowned meeting place has returned in all its glory.

The Spheres (affectionately known as the Mall’s Balls) have returned to a new location outside David Jones (approximately 2.5 metres north of their old stomping ground).

The late Dr Bert Flugelman invented the 4 metre sculpture of two large stainless steel spheres balanced one on top of the other, each with a diameter of 2.15 metres. The total cost of the creation was $18,000.

“The artwork draws people in and works beautifully in a public setting, reflecting the world around it,” said Bert’s daughter, Kay Flugelman.

They were originally donated to the city by the Hindmarsh Building Society (now Adelaide Bank) to mark the society's centenary and placed adjacent to John Martin’s store in the Mall on 5 October 1977.

The Adelaide City Council supported Bert’s wishes of commissioning Brister and Company to refurbish The Spheres while they were temporarily removed during construction. As part of the memorial to Bert, a plaque with a commemorative quote that his family selected was laid at the reinstatement of the balls earlier this month.

Flugelman’s other works include Tetrahedra on the Festival Centre Plaza, Continuum and the Knot in Light Square.
