There are more opportunities to participate in the Santos Tour Down Under’s Festival of Cycling than ever before bringing the UCI WorldTour event even closer to the public in 2016.

Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said the Tour was the largest cycling event of its type in the southern hemisphere.

“The 2016 Santos Tour Down Under will kick off tonight with the traditional pre-race Team Presentation in Victoria Square, featuring the international voices of cycling Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen, followed by a free concert from ARIA award-winner Jessica Mauboy,” he said.

“The Team Presentation always attracts a huge crowd and will be the first time the 20 competing men’s teams will be presented to the public as well as the 17 teams in the Santos Women’s Tour.

“The Tour Village really lifts the atmosphere of the city centre in January and is a one-stop-shop for anyone who has an interest in, or questions about cycling and the event.

“The Santos Tour Down Under is well established in promoting South Australia to visitors and fans watching worldwide, while also encouraging recreational cycling among fans.

“The State Government is very proud to own and manage this iconic event, which heralds the start of the UCI WorldTour, and to see even more people embrace it in its 18th year.

“Last year’s Santos Tour Down Under attracted 37,000 visitors to the state over the nine-day festival and injected almost $48 million into the South Australian economy.

“It is a fantastic asset and an exciting event which continues to grow through support from the public, sponsors, councils, media and the cycling industry.

“In 2016 the Santos Tour Down Under offers a number of new participation events sure to appeal to everyone from high-level amateur cyclists to families and children.

“The inaugural Norton Summit Time Trial will be staged on Monday and gives ambitious riders the chance to experience and compete in a challenging individual time trial.

“Meanwhile, tomorrow’s Bupa Family Ride will see parents, children and friends riding the People’s Choice Classic city circuit before the professionals take to the track later in the day.”
